Ray Gladden - The Methusala Buck

I went on my first mule deer hunt in 1989 and since that time have taken
6 different mule deer in 3 different states, but had never killed a really
“monster” muley buck.  After reading several articles on the quality of
mule deer in the eastern plains of Colorado, I decided to give that area
a try.  I booked an “Eastern Plains” hunt with Donny Carr with Golden
Eagle Outfitters in December of 2004, with the hunt scheduled for late
October 2005.  After 10 months of being on ‘pins and needles”, I arrived
in camp the day before the hunt was to begin.  After checking the rifle
from the plane trip, my guide, Gary Hall suggested we do some long-
range scouting for the next morning’s hunt.  We entered a sage- brush
flat that was surrounded by hills on three sides in a horseshoe shaped
configuration.  After about 20 minutes with a spotting scope, Gary said,
“There’s a buck!”  After about 5 minutes of Gary describing where the
buck was laying, I was finally able to find the bedded buck with my 10X
binoculars.  Even at a distance of over 1000 yards we could count 5
points on one side.  We carefully backed out of the area and decided he
was good enough to give a try the next morning.

First light found us in the same area, and after only about 15 minutes
Gary said, “There he is again!”  Again, the buck was over 1000 yards
away and heading to the top of the drainage to bed for the morning.
After only about two minutes of watching the buck, he disappeared in
the rocks and trees at the top of the drainage.  The wind was blowing
from us to the area the buck had exited, so Gary said we should circle
around, climb up on top, and carefully hunt our way back to the area the
buck had disappeared. When we got on top, the terrain was fairly open
with juniper trees, sage, and rocks.  We had a steady breeze in our
face, and slowly still-hunted back to the area we had last seen the
buck.  The closer we go to the edge of the rim, the slower we got.  I
stopped trying to look for the deer and concentrated on my foot
placement, trusting Gary’s young eyes to find the buck.  We reached
the rim of the drainage, and worked our way in the direction we saw the
buck exit, After less than 100 yards and 30 minutes later, I could tell by
Gary’s posture that he had seen something.  He motioned me to him,
and there at less than 15 yards away was the bedded buck!

The stiff wind in our face provided both scent control and enough
background noise that the buck was unaware of our approach.  He was
facing us with his head behind a rock, with only half of the left side of his
rack visible.  We still didn’t know if he was a “shooter” at this point since
we had seen him earlier from such a long distance, and could not be
sure how good he was.  We were so close I couldn’t believe it, and after
several minutes took a picture of him bedded so we could prove our
incredible luck.  After several more minutes the buck figured out
something wasn’t quite right, and exploded from his bed.  I was able to
get a bullet in him at the last second as he was disappearing over the
top.  When we came up on the downed buck, I could not believe my
eyes!   He had a massive rack, 28 ½ inches wide with extra points
everywhere, a total of 9 on one side and 7 on the other.  He had15-inch
G-2s, and green cactus around the bases where he had been rubbing!
The hunt I waited a lifetime for ended in less than three hours! The buck
green scored 201 7/8 and was 7 ½ years old!

Mark Drury can finally join the rest of the Drury Team on the Journal! He
went out west to Colorado to team back up with Donny Carr of Golden
Eagle Outfitters and rekindle some of the magic that he and his wife
Tracy experienced the previous year on their wedding anniversary. On
the first morning of a 4 day hunt, Mark and guide Jackie Murphy elected
to go back to the exact spot where Tracy had harvested her magnificent
mule deer a year earlier. The decision paid off! Jackie spotted the
bachelor group of mule deer coming through and the race was on to get
into position. Jackie leading the way up and down the side of a bluff, put
Mark and cameraman in perfect position to get down wind and belly
crawl the last couple of hundred feet. Once they were in position Mark
put a perfect 120-yard, open sight, muzzleloader shot on a magnificent
170" class mule deer. It didn't run 100 yards before expiring. This is
Mark's first harvest of the Fall and although Tracy could not make the
trip back to Colorado with him he still enjoyed it very much.
It just doesn't get any better than this...
